Siemens Competition Regional Finals Kick off this Weekend

TEXAS TEEN SCIENCE SENSATIONS VIE FOR $100,000 SCHOLARSHIP IN NATION’S PREMIER HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE COMPETITION
Twelve High School Students from Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth and Katy Named Regional Finalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology
Twelve Texas high school students today were named Regional Finalists in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology (www.siemens-foundation.org/en/competition.htm), the nation’s leading science research competition for high school students. They will showcase their research to expert university judges. Regional Finalists compete for a $3,000 prize for an individual and $6,000 for a team and a shot at $100,000 at the National Finals.
The Siemens Competition Regional Finalists from Texas are:
Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth:
- George Qi of Austin, a sophomore at Westwood High School and Shenghao Wang of Austin, a junior at Liberal Arts and Science Academy, selected as a team for their mathematics research related to cloud computing.
- Alexandra Ilic of Austin, a junior at Westlake High School; Kevin Tian of Austin, a junior at Westwood High School and Ignacio Ramirez of Fort Worth, a senior at Polytechnic High School, selected as a team for their mathematics research related to electrical power networks.
- Mariam Saifullah of Richardson and Shulin Ye of Lewisville, seniors at Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, selected as a team for their chemistry research related to ionic fluids.
- Preeti Singhal of Arlington, a senior at Arlington High School, selected for her biochemistry research related to cancer therapy.
Plano
- Bhaskaran Nair of Plano, a senior at Plano Senior High School, selected for his genetics research related to viral diseases.
- Favyen Bastani and Jonathan Lin of Plano, juniors at Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, selected as a team for their computer science research related to software errors.
Katy:
- Stephanie Su of Katy, a senior at Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, selected for her biochemistry research related to anti-microbial drugs.
“Each year, the Siemens Foundation invites America’s high school students to make their mark in the world of science,” said Jeniffer Harper-Taylor, president of the Siemens Foundation. “We commend this year’s Regional Finalists from Texas on rising to the challenge and look forward to getting to know them and their research as this year’s Siemens Competition unfolds.”
Administered by the College Board, the Siemens Competition awards college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories. The 12 students from Texas are among 94 forward-thinking teens from 25 states named Regional Finalists this year. The winners of the Regional Finals at The University of Texas at Austin will be announced Saturday evening, November 6. They are invited to compete at the National Finals in Washington, DC, December 2–6, 2010, for the grand prize of $100,000 and national acclaim for having reached the pinnacle of scientific achievement at the high school level.

Regional Finalists are invited to compete at one of six regional events held over three consecutive weekends in November at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The University of Texas at Austin, Georgia Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame and Carnegie Mellon University.
